Sometimes, we are our own worst enemy.

This thought occurs to me now having read some of the comments from my previous post on money magic.

    You ever felt magically “blocked”?

For me, this happens most often with financial/abundance magic but cosmic blockage can strike any magical endeavour. It’s like I can feel it out there working… But it’s just not getting through.

There are barriers in the way. Obstacles. And for the life of me I can’t work out what they are.

Nine times out of ten these obstacles have been internal. “Wrong headedness” has a lot to answer for. What we want, what we think we want and what we need rarely seem to match up.

The good news is you don’t have to work out exactly what the obstacles are in order to remove them. The even better news is that it is super-easy.

    Here’s how I do it:

    1. Create a Success Map

This first step has been freely adapted from my life as a corporate media whore. It’s also probably the most important step. I really want you to do it. Seriously. I may not talk to you again if you skip it.

And don’t be turned off just because it sounds ‘businessy’. Take it from me. Magic hasn’t become more corporate. Corporate thinking has become more magical. The success map is very much one of ‘our’ tools. Even if I’m riffing off Brendan Burchard in this particular case.

Open up a new Google Doc or similar because I really want you to get this down. Don’t do it in your head. Then answer these questions:

    • What are you trying to accomplish this year?
    • What strategies have you tried to improve your life? Which ones worked and which ones didn’t?
    • What do you need to do to double your happiness this year?

That last one is the kicker. And you can be as rough as you like. No need for complete sentences or anything. You’re not writing to the Queen. It’s a map of your brain. No one else need see it.

    2. Pour in the Drano®

Some entities and Gods fall rather neatly into multiple worldviews; psychological, spirit-based, scientific.

Lord Ganesh is not one of these. He very much falls into the “is most definitely probably a being with an external reality of his own.”

And this is coming from a dyed-in-the-wool chaos magician so, you know… Think about that.

He is the Remover of Obstacles par excellence. And Step 2 is all about getting his help removing the blockages you don’t even know you have. He is also supremely approachable so really just have at it. If you want to go deeper then there is a plethora of information about Ganesh out there.

This is his mantra (or one of them, anyway):

    Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha

    (Om gum guh-nuh-puh-tai-yei nahm-ah-ha)

“Om and salutations to the Remover of Obstacles for which Gum is the seed.”

    • Light some incense. I like sandalwood for this. It says ‘India’ to me.
    • Get into a relaxed, meditative state and then get chanting.
    • Finish up when it ‘feels right’. But go for at least twenty minutes.
    • Then, whenever you can, go back to the mantra; while washing up, driving, waiting for the bus, whatever. You cannot do this often enough.

Tradition says this mantra should be chanted for at least forty days but it is truly so effective that it’s one of my high-rotation mantras. Yes, I have a mental iPod of mantras. Because they rock. What I am saying is you can and should use it for as long as you like.

When I chant this I can literally feel blockages being blown away from me in all directions, as if swept by an enormous invisible broom from space. I can feel this for miles around. It’s really quite something.

    3. Get a clear picture

Success map done? Obstacles swept aside?

Could it be that, for one of the first times in your life, you are truly open to an unblocked, unfiltered, “right-headed” success divination?

Only one way to find out.

    • Clear your mind of all preconceptions. Even “forget” what job you currently have. I’m talking about being completely empty, here.
    • Then use your divination tool of choice. (Mine is Tarot.)
    • Ask for any and all guidance pertaining to your road to success.

‘Definition’ is for dictionaries. I want you to deliberately leave ‘your road to success’ undefined. Then let me know how you get on.

    The end result

You may well come away from this simple exercise with a radically different view of your personal success and how best to maximise it. Or you may get a reading that says “you’re on the right track… But now it’s going to be faster.” You will almost certainly have uncovered steps to take that you would not have thought of in a million years. And herein lies the real power of this technique.

The rest, as they say, is up to you.

At the very least, you will hopefully have picked up a speedy out-of-the-box unblocker in the form of the mantra.

What about you? How do you typically handle magical blocks? I know it’s a universal problem so there are bound to be all manner of solutions I have never even heard of. So please share. I learn so damn much from these comments.

“Om and salutations to the Remover of Obstacles for which Gum is the seed.”

Where did you get this translation from?

Ganapatiye means Lord of Ganas or groups. The implication would be a group of worshipers or Yogis as in Ganachakra. While he is certainly used for obstacle clearing – that isn’t written into the mantra anywhere. At least not this one which is a Mula Mantra meant primarily to build up connection to the diety itself. There are Karma mantras for Ganapati aimed at everything from defeating enemies to winning at Gambling.

    2. April 26, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Seriously??! That’s an incorrect translation? I have been using it for more than a decade.

I got it from a book of mantras in Australia when I was about fifteen.

      Huh. Things you learn.

Wait… Here it is: “Healing Mantras” by Thomas Ashley-Farrand. His bio makes it seem like he’s got the right creds.

    3. April 26, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Oh no, wait… I see what you’re saying.

Yeah, you can definitely find more laser-focused mantras for obstacle removal out there… But this is the only one that I can personally speak to the efficacy of.

Being faced with the threat “I may not talk to you again if you skip it” (see! I knew you were the shunning kind!), I dutifully fired up Google Docs and really applied myself to digging deep and answering those three questions honestly. I came up with a few answers that surprised me, despite the fact that I regularly make these sorts of lists. The last two questions open new avenues of exploration.

When you gave the next step as hook up the sewer snake and plow through the blocks, you know what happened? I felt a twinge of fear. Oh shit! If I really get what I want, what will my life be like? I have a hard time imagining who I’ll be and what new responsibilities that will put on my shoulders.

Telling, eh what? I think I’m going to have a long talk with myself tonight.

Bummer about the Ganesh mantra. I was ready to use it, being a huge Ganesh fan myself. I have a statue of him on my altar. But now I wish I had a mantra that really says what you thought it said. Maybe I’ll just make up a rhyme of my own. Unless Jason has a good one. Jason?

It’s still a Ganesh mantra… It just has less to do specifically with obstacle removal… Even though I have used it to remove obstacles. You can find subtle variations on it all around the place.

And I suppose I am technically the “ironically shunning” kind of person. :)

I’ll throw up some alternatives in due course. This will be my homework project.

Totally get what you mean about the fear thing. Our brains are all messed up.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with this Mantra as a mantra to use to clear obstacles.

Chances are you would need Abhisheka to get a proper Karma Mantra. I have one for Ganesha that is used by the Kagyu and Sakya (Tibetan Buddhists treat Ganesha as an enlightened protector).

I was just saying that the mantra doesn’t literally translate as having to do with overcoming obstacles. The author took some poetic liberties to get his point accross.

It doesn’t have to specifically say that though. Ganapati will clear your obstacles if you say the mantra with that intent. I can assure anyone out there that this mantra, used in the way you prescribe, WILL overcome obstacles.

“Magic hasn’t become more corporate. Corporate thinking has become more magical.”

Yes, I agree with this. I really think that one of the key obstacles to work on with Ganesha or someone is the negative ideas that we project on to corporate and magic, not realizing that it’s individuals with bad ideas (and good ones), not institutions.

I have just found a Ganesha mantra that is specifically for removing obstacles:

      Aum Vighna Nashanaya Namah

You’re awesome. Have I mentioned that recently?

Jonquil, I’m gonna add an extra step for you: Learn Google Docs. It’s awesome and keeps all your precious ideas safe forever.

But a quill and some vellum will work just as good. :)

We’re agreed on the sweet thing. When I had a separate Ganesh altar (now he’s on my mantlepiece because I live in a share house in central London) I always found he was rather partial to Turkish Delight. Maybe it was the rose water in it?

    14. April 27, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Yep. Thats a good one. Vighna is powerful word and appears in lots of wrathful mantras in Buddhist Tantra as well.

The two mantras can be used well together. Do the Root mantra first to build connection to Ganesha, than do the Action Mantra to conquer your obstacles.

“Learn Google Docs. It’s awesome and keeps all your precious ideas safe forever.”

You must have access to a different Google than I do.

Hahaha. I think it’s more that I have taken the blue pill.

Or the green pill. Whichever pill it is that means I’m willing to accept whatever my mechanical overlords think is best.

Thank you very much for this post. You’ve inspired me to start working closer with Ganesha, and I think it’s going to work out very well. Thanks to the kind lady at the local Indo-Pak grocery, I’ve got a statue for him by the door now: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10100277971370173&set=a.565277871683.2163036.23203144&type=1&theater
