For Uncle Al’s birthday week, we speak to Cath Thompson about her recently released The Magickal Language of the Book of the Law: An English Qaballa Primer.
EQ is an alphanumeric system derived from Liber Al that allows for the examination of any other text or concept within the context of a Book of the Law worldview. I gave myself some homework, which you can find below.

As mentioned on the show, I EQ’d The Hypostasis of the Archons. Very interesting results:
- HYPOSTASIS – 115
- ARCHONS – 56
- HYPOSTASIS OF THE ARCHONS – 115 + 25 + 23 + 56 = 33 (249 Or 24 + 9 = 33)
- H.O.T.A. – 36
- S.F.E.S. – 53
Despise, alienate, meanest, priest: Hypostasis or ‘reality’ is the mean, alienating description of the priests, who despise life.
Khonsu, rule, shrouds, fear: Interestingly, Archons literally equates to the word ‘rule’ -as in Reality of the Rulers. But it also equates to ‘shrouds’ and ‘fear’, suggesting their ephemeral nature. The reality of these rulers is one maintained by fear but it is an illusory shroud that can be blow away with a human breath.
HYPOSTASIS OF THE ARCHONS
EQ stops at the number 231 for various Crowley reasons. So I numerologically added 249 together to get 33. Which is ‘Hell’. The Reality of the Rulers –in toto– is what we call Hell. Our reality -as maintained by these priestly, malevolent shades- is literally Hell. This is about as Gnostic as it comes.
In the system, if you EQ the first letter of a phrase -which is its beginning- you derive where the process begins. We get ‘Mask’ or ‘Souls’. The Reality of the Rulers is a mask, it is not actual reality. It occults our own souls.
Similarly, the last letters are where the phrase or process ends. We get ‘clear’ or ‘ordeal’. ie clarity is achieved at the end of the ordeal, once the mask has been removed.
I think Crowley would have liked all this. It hearkens back to ‘Gnosticism is the Map, Animism is the Territory’. From a Thelemic perspective, we might say Gnosticism is an illusion but it is a dangerous one to ignore. It shows us how reality is not constructed for our benefit but that construction itself is illusory. The only way out is through.
